About Jean Noriko McAlister
I am a transparent watercolorist and paint primarily landscapes. On annual trips to national parks of the western states, I paint on site and collect reference photographs to use in studio work. I am moved by the natural world and through my paintings I try to express my feelings about places I visit. Some places have strong connections to my ideas of self. I identify with them. When I paint a mountain, a tree, a rock or a meadow, I form a relationship with it. As I closely observe my subject, I begin to truly know it. I hope others will be reminded of their own feelings or experiences of a place when they view my landscapes.
In 1976, I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Art at Cal State Fullerton. I became a teacher and have taught elementary and high school for 32 years. I have been painting in transparent watercolor for the last 22 years. My work has previously been selected for the "Made in California" exhibit and the following shows: Orange Art Association, Huntington Beach Art Association, Cypress Art League, and Yosemite Renaissance Juried Exhibition.
